Debate Information Meeting / First Practice

Interesting in joining the Cooper Debate team. We will have an informational meeting on September 13th in Room 241 after school. There will we discuss what it takes to be on the debate team, go over why you will want to join and much more. Practice starts for returning students on September 15th. First year students practice starts on September 20th.

Debate Camp 2010

Robbinsdale Schools will again be hosting a debate camp for Novice (first year) and JV (second and third year) students at Robbinsdale Cooper High School. The debate camp is open to any student who wishes to learn about debate. Cost of the camp is free for Robbinsdale Area Schools students - out of district students the cost is $30.00 per student. Students are responsible for providing their own lunch or bringing money. The camp runs from August 23rd to August 25th - 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM

We will focus on the fundamentals of debate and review the first topic for LD and Public Forum.

Student Congress Dates

Students who want to participate in student congress just need to let me know. The dates are:

Feb 9th at Eagan High School

Feb 18th at Blake High School

Feb 26th at Normandale Community College

The 9th and 18th are after school events. So we will leave right at the completion of school and anticipate being home each day around 7:00 PM.

The National Qualifier on the 26th of February is during the day. Student will leave around 9:00 AM from school and we will return around 4:30 PM.

If you want to attend I do need to know as I have limited space in the school van for students. If numbers warrant a larger vehicle, I will get a bus.

NFL Tournament Details

Here are the details of the NFL Tournament.

Leave Friday - January 22nd at 1:55 PM
- This is day two of finals so we are trying to leave as close to the end of the day without getting stuck in the buses as much as possible.

Return Friday - January 22nd at 10:00 PM

This tournament is a double elimination tournament meaning once you have lost two rounds of debate you are eliminated from the tournament.

Leave Saturday - January 23rd at 7:00 AM

Return Saturday - January 23rd at 6:00 PM

Cooper Debate qualifies for state tournament; Section 4AA Champion

For the sixth year in a row Robbinsdale Cooper Debate has qualified for the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) State Tournament. And for the fourth time in those six year, Robbinsdale Cooper walks away as the Section 4AA Champion. Congratulations to senior Chyenne Thibodo and freshman Collin Brown for qualifying for the state tournament. This is the second year in a row Chyenne has qualified for the state tournament. Collin is the first freshman to qualify as a freshman from Cooper. This is the third year in a row that Cooper has qualified the maximum number of students to the state tournament.

The sixth straight appearance to the state tournament marks the 5th longest active streak of consecutive years a school has qualified students to the state tournament. In those six year, Cooper has qualified nine students to the state tournament. Won the state tournament in 2007, was runner-up in 2008 and finished in the top four two other times.

The state tournament will be held on the campus of the University of Minnesota on January 15th and 16th. The MSHSL State Debate Tournament is the oldest running tournament held by the MSHSL and was first held in 1902.

This is it. The tournament only for JV and Novice students. Hopefully we will be able to send the entire team and come out with some great hardware. Here is the details of this tournament. It is a two-day tournament. Students will be excused from class on Friday.

Information Meeting/Practice Starts

Students interested in Joining the Robbinsdale Cooper debate team should attend an informational meeting on Monday, September 14th at 2:20 PM in room B241. Practice starts on Wednesday, September 16th for all debate students and runs from 2:20 PM to 4:00 PM. Practice continues on Monday and Wednesday's from September to January.

Cooper Coach honored with MDTA Distinguished Service Award

Congratulations to Robbinsdale Cooper and Armstrong debate head coach Richard (D.J.) Brynteson for being presented the Minnesota Debate Teachers Association (MDTA) James Graupner Distinguished Service Award. The Distinguished Service Award is presented to debate coaches or other distinguished individuals who have made outstanding contributions to education through debate. Not awarded on an annual basis, the Distinguished Service Award is the highest award the MDTA can bestow to an individual. In his fourteenth year of coaching debate, Brynteson is the youngest person to be awarded with the honor.

Starting his career coaching at St. Francis High School and coaching at Robbinsdale Cooper for the past eight years, Brynteson has qualified students for the state tournament 11 years with 17 different competitors. Winning the MSHSL State Tournament in 2007, runner up in 2008 and qualifying 8 students to the National Forensics League (NFL) National Debate Tournament and finishing 7^th place in 2006. In 2005, Brynteson was presented the MDTA Debate Coach of the Year award.

In addition to success during the debate season, Brynteson has been committed to extending debate throughout the state. Serving on the MDTA Executive Board, MSHSL Debate Advisory Committee and the NFL Southern Minnesota District Committee.

Armstrong/Cooper Debate Camp

Debate Information Night

Robbinsdale Armstrong and Cooper Debate Team invites you to our debate information night. You can attend either our May 27th at 6:30 PM meeting held in the Armstrong High School cafeteria or May 28th at 6:30 PM in Room 242 at Robbinsdale Cooper High School.

So why join debate?

Getting involved in high school is important to feeling connected to your new school and making new friends. You should consider joining the team because you are an exceptional student and debate will help you get the very most out of your high school experience. No other activity will impact you like debate. Consider these facts:

Very few high schools in America have a debate team, yet more than 65% of Harvard’s class of 2009 identified debate as their primary extracurricular activity in high school. A Wall Street Journal report specifically highlighted a “consistent trend” in college admission. State and national debate award winners have a 22% to 30% higher acceptance rate at top tier colleges and being captain of the debate team “improved an applicant’s chances by more than 60% compared with the rest of the pool.” No other sport or activity had this kind of statistical impact.

Debate teaches you how to learn – a skill that is essential in today’s world. As President Bill Brody of Johns Hopkins put it, being really good at "learning how to learn," is an enormous asset in an era of rapid change and innovation, when new jobs will be phased in and old ones phased out faster than ever.

Joining the debate team puts you in the company of many leaders and entertainers. Along with Presidents Nixon, Johnson, and Clinton, half of all United States Senators were debaters. Oprah Winfrey, Brad Pitt, Bruce Springsteen and John Wayne were also debaters.

But most importantly debate is fun. Hope you can join us.

Thibodo Awarded MDTA Scholarship

In it's first year of awarding a scholarship the Minnesota Debate Teachers Association (MDTA) has awarded Junior Chyenne Thibodo with a scholarship to attend a debate camp this summer. The MDTA took applications for the Scholarship from Mid-March to Mid-April for the $1500.00 scholarship. Those who applied were evaluated on responses to the student application and coaches recommendation.

This gift from the MDTA does more than just give one student at Cooper the opportunity to attend an exclusive summer debate camp, but gives the entire team important insight to the current trends of the national and local circuits that can be shared with everyone. This gives our team an opportunity to attend a camp that our team would typically happen. And for this Chy, our captain, to be able to gain experience that she can use to help lead the team for next year is simply invaluable.

Thank you to the MDTA and it's donor for this wonderful opportunity.
